The 2025 AI-ALOE Retreat convened on March 6-7 at the Coda Building in Atlanta, GA, bringing together researchers, practitioners, and stakeholders to discuss the future of AI-ALOE. The two-day event focused on design, architecture, theory, integration, partnerships, and strategic planning for the initiative.
Day 1: Design, Architecture, and Collaboration
The retreat began with a welcome address by Executive Director Ashok Goel, setting the stage for the discussions ahead. The morning focused on design and architecture, key areas that drive AI-ALOE’s development. Speakers provided overviews of AI-ALOE’s technologies, breakout groups collaborated on ideas for a collective publication, and 1EdTech Consortium facilitated discussions on architecture.
In the afternoon, the focus shifted to theory, integration, and partnerships. The theory session examined foundational concepts shaping AI-ALOE’s technologies. Integration discussions centered on aligning various components of the initiative for greater synergy. Breakout discussions provided opportunities for members to exchange ideas and collaborate on solutions. The final session of the day addressed partnerships, emphasizing collaborative efforts with industry.
Day 2: Risks, Opportunities, and Future Planning
The morning focused on addressing questions and concerns regarding the NSF, AI Institutes Program, and AI-ALOE’s trajectory.
Participants then formed four breakout groups to explore key areas: risk analysis, contingency planning, technology commoditization, and data sharing. Reports from each group provided valuable insights into challenges and opportunities, creating a clear path to continue innovating AI effectiveness, efficiency, access, scale, and personalization.
The retreat concluded by capturing key takeaways and outlining the next steps for AI-ALOE. The event created a clearer vision of the initiative’s direction, strengthened collaborations, and actionable strategies for future growth.
