Ashok Goel, a professor of Computer Science and Human-Centered Computing in the School of Interactive Computing at Georgia Tech has seen the true influence of AI in education, and shared details during a recent podcast with Sara Custer, editor of THE (Times Higher Education) Campus and senior content curator, Miranda Prynne.
Goel would know. He directs the NSF AI Institute for Adult Learning and Online Education (AI-ALOE) at Georgia Tech, in collaboration with a conglomerate of research universities, industrial companies and nonprofits, and for more than 35 years, he has conducted research into cognitive systems at the intersection of artificial intelligence and cognitive science with a focus on computational design and creativity. For the last decade, Goel has focused his research efforts on AI in education and education in AI.
“Universities are collecting a lot more data, in fact, Georgia Tech, over the last six months, started its own large-scale data enterprise where they are not only collecting data, but analyzing that data and using it to help teachers and learners. ” he said about AI-ALOE Institute. “What is different between AI-ALOE and all of the other AI in educations spaces is that we are introducing AI agents, in the middle, like Jill Watson.”
Goel, who is also chief scientist with Georgia Tech’s Center for 21st Century Universities (C21U), is the brainchild behind Jill Watson, an AI-enabled teaching assistant conceived in 2015 and developed the following year in Georgia Tech’s Design & Intelligence Lab to answer student questions about a particular class and curriculum.
