AI-ALOE student researcher Yoojin Bae was selected to participate in the Workshop on Multimodal Multiparty Learning Analytics (MMLA), held as part of the Educational Data Mining Conference (EDM 2025) from July 20 to July 23 in Palermo, Italy.
Research on Classroom Engagement
At the workshop, Bae presented her study on applying multimodal large language models to classroom video analysis. Using recordings from multiple camera angles, her research explored how these models can combine visual and contextual cues to detect patterns of student engagement, collaboration, and interaction.

Her approach, which emphasizes interpretable insights from video data, is designed to help instructors better understand learning processes such as self-regulated learning and make evidence-based instructional decisions.
Representing AI-ALOE in Panel Discussion
In addition to presenting her research, Bae served as a panelist in a session representing the NSF AI National Institute, AI-ALOE. The discussion highlighted the role of multimodal analytics in advancing educational AI and underscored how NSF AI National Institutes are contributing to progress in this emerging field.
