About Cherie

Hi, I’m Cherie Lum, a Research Scientist in the DILab, part of the AI-ALOE initiative at the Georgia Institute of Technology. I specialize in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), with a master’s degree in computer science and an undergraduate degree in sociology. I find a lot of joy in connecting people with the right products—or the right people—and I’m lucky to do that every day in my role.

Cherie’s journey with AI-ALOE

My path to AI-ALOE began during my time in Georgia Tech’s Online Master of Science in Computer Science (OMSCS) program, where I focused on HCI. One of my courses included a year-long research project based in DILab. That experience sparked a deeper interest and eventually led to a more permanent role in the lab after I graduated in May. Today, I serve as our “HCI expert.”

In my role, I guide teams through the IRB process, conduct user interviews, and collaborate with technologists and scientists to design user-centered tools like Jill Watson, Vera, SAMI, and Ivy. I regularly speak with teachers and students to ensure the AI solutions we develop are not only functional but truly aligned with users’ needs and experiences.

Outside the office

When I’m not working, you’ll usually find me traveling—especially to places where I can explore cultures through food and conversations with new people. I’m also passionate about photography. I love capturing images of animals, whether on land or while snorkeling or diving. There’s something magical about seeing the world through someone—or something—else’s lens. It reminds me how much wonder is hiding in plain sight, just waiting to be discovered. I’m deeply grateful for everyone I meet along the way.
