AI-ALOE Webinar

Join us for an AI-ALOE webinar with Professor Rene Kizilcec from Cornell University on Wednesday, January 22, 2025 from 12 -1 pm EST. This talk will introduce the mission and approach of the National Tutoring Observatory (NTO) and share some ongoing work in the Future of Learning Lab. The NTO emerges as a result of two notable forces: (1) Many communities have turned to tutoring to address the significant learning losses caused by pandemic disruptions in schooling. This has generated an unprecedented amount of authentic recordings of targeted teaching practice. (2) Artificial intelligence is increasingly involved in teaching and learning throughout the life course, but most AI models have no training in being good teachers. There is a need for high-quality, diverse, and context-rich data on teaching to evaluate and improve AI models in teaching and learning contexts, and we just launched the NTO to meet this need.

Rene Kizilcec is an Associate Professor in the Bowers College of Computing and Information Science at Cornell University, where he directs the Cornell Future of Learning Lab. Kizilcec studies behavioral, psychological, and computational aspects of technology in education to inform practices and policies that promote learning, equity, and academic and career success. His work has appeared in Science and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, won multiple awards, and is funded by the NSF, Schmidt Futures Foundation, and Jacobs Foundation. Kizilcec holds a Ph.D. in Communication and M.Sc. in Statistics from Stanford University.
