Arthur Graesser

January 13, 2025 – Dr. Arthur Graesser, professor emeritus at the University of Memphis and Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Oxford, has been named a Fellow of the Cognitive Science Society, a prestigious honor recognizing his outstanding contributions to the field. Graesser is a valued AI-ALOE External Advisory Board member.

Fellows of the Cognitive Science Society are selected for research that demonstrates sustained excellence and impact on the cognitive science community. This honor is awarded to individuals who maintain professional integrity and whose research makes a significant impact on cognitive science.

Dr. Graesser, a renowned researcher and former president of multiple professional societies, has authored over 800 publications and co-developed influential technologies, including AutoTutor and Coh-Metrix. These tools have advanced natural language processing, educational technology, and discourse analysis. His career has been marked by leadership roles, including serving as editor of Discourse Processes and the Journal of Educational Psychology.

Reflecting on his induction, Dr. Graesser remarked, “The cognitive science society means a great deal to me. I received my PH degree in 1977 at the University of California at San Diego, one of the major hubs that launched the cognitive science field.  The essence of cognitive science is on interdisciplinary research, which has inspired me throughout my five-decade career.  The AI-ALOE group has a similar interdisciplinary spirit that is scaling up and impacting the real world.”

Dr. Graesser’s research spans text comprehension, question answering, memory, emotions, and human-computer interaction. His achievements exemplify the interdisciplinary focus of the Cognitive Science Society, underscoring his deep professional integrity and innovative contributions to the field.
