July 1, 2024 — Ashok Goel, executive director of NSF’s National AI Institute for Adult Learning & Online Education (AI-ALOE) and computer science professor at the Georgia Tech, was featured in the Georgia Tech School of Interactive Computing’s June newsletter for his recent interview with EducationWeek. In the interview, Goel discussed the benefits and challenges of AI in education.

While AI can help personalize lesson plans, it also has the potential for bias. “AI’s feedback on student work might be right for a neurotypical child and maybe not right for a neuroatypical child,” according to Goel. The key issue is the AI’s inability to differentiate between neurotypical and neuroatypical children due to a lack of comprehensive data on neuroatypical children. This distinction is critical as neuroatypical children may have unique learning needs.
