July 29, 2024 — This fall, a small group of professors at Morehouse College will use teaching assistants powered by artificial intelligence. These “AI TAs” will appear as digital avatars that resemble each professor’s physical appearance. This approach builds on Georgia Tech’s pioneering use of AI in education, exemplified by Jill Watson, a virtual teaching assistant that has helped more than 10,000 students since 2016. Ashok Goel, the Executive Director of AI-ALOE, stated that using virtual teaching assistants “has been shown to improve teaching presence in online education for adult learners.”

The goal of  Morehouse College’s AI TAs is to provide 24/7 support to students, offering them a way to ask questions about course content and receive answers whenever they need. These AI TA’s will also be able to use multimedia resources, such as images and videos, to engage students and deepen their understanding.
