National Tutoring Observatory with Rene Kizilcec

Workshop On Research And Development With AI Tutoring Models

Cornell University’s Professor Rene Kizilcec delivered a webinar on January 22, 2025, introducing the National Tutoring Observatory (NTO), a groundbreaking initiative aimed at improving teaching and learning through artificial intelligence. Hosted by AI-ALOE, the session highlighted the NTO’s mission to leverage authentic recordings of tutoring sessions to create high-quality, diverse datasets for research and development. These resources are designed to address learning losses caused by pandemic disruptions and improve AI teaching models, which currently lack sufficient training in effective teaching practices.

Reshaping The Future Of Education

Kizilcec, an Associate Professor at the Bowers College of Computing and Information Science at Cornell and director of their Future of Learning Lab, emphasized the NTO’s potential to advance the science of learning. He detailed plans to develop open-source infrastructure for processing tutoring recordings and make them available for research and development. He demonstrated advanced tools built to improve AI tutoring. Kizilcec also outlined critical challenges, such as creating incentives for data sharing and structuring effective legal agreements, to ensure the initiative’s success.
