College professor teaching a class.

November 12, 2024 — Chronicle Intelligence, a division of The Chronicle of Higher Education, recently published a comprehensive report on AI in Education, featuring Ashok Goel and AI-ALOE – AI Institute for Adult Learning and Online Education.  Colleges are grappling with the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in education as AI tools become more prevalent on campuses. Administrators see AI as a powerful tool to improve efficiency and enhance teaching, while skeptics raise concerns about its potential to dehumanize education and affect students’ development in writing and research.

AI has been around for decades, but its rapid growth, especially since the release of ChatGPT in 2022, has brought it into mainstream use. A recent survey found that 86% of college students use AI in their studies, with 24% using it to draft assignments. Generative AI tools are now being explored for a range of campus tasks, from answering student questions to assisting professors in large classes.

However, the use of AI in higher education is not without its challenges. Administrators are debating where to place boundaries on its use, while faculty members are experimenting with AI in various disciplines. Despite the potential for AI to transform education, the question remains: how can colleges balance innovation with preserving the essential human elements of learning?
