A year ago the innovation group at Instructure (makers of Canvas LMS) started researching the needs of learners in the “non-traditional” space—folks who aren’t pursuing accredited degrees. As we talked with these learners, we found that the overwhelming majority are focused on learning as a means to an end, that goal being more career opportunity and advancement. We connected with institutions to learn about what’s working (and not working) in supporting the growth and development of these learners as they seek career-oriented objectives. We also engaged employers to deepen our understanding of their experiences around hiring and career advancement. Through this, and continuing research and development, we have developed a platform that seeks to improve the coordination of all three of these stakeholders using skills as the core currency. In this talk, Shaun will share more about the lessons learned through this research, and show some of the capabilities of this emerging platform.
