Five years ago, AI-ALOE launched with a bold vision: harnessing the power of artificial intelligence to transform adult learning and online education. Today, that vision has evolved into a nationally recognized research effort whose technologies, partnerships, and discoveries are helping shape the future of learning, workforce development, and AI-enabled education.

This October, AI-ALOE celebrates five years as a National Science Foundation AI Institute. Since its founding in 2021, the institute has brought together researchers, educators, students, and industry partners to develop and study AI-powered learning technologies that expand access to education and advance new approaches to teaching and learning.

AI-ALOE has grown into a vibrant research community, advancing technologies that have reached tens of thousands of learners across hundreds of courses while contributing to a growing body of research on AI and learning. The institute’s work has demonstrated how AI can support learners and educators while creating new opportunities for workforce development and lifelong learning.

As AI continues to reshape education and work, the anniversary serves not only as a celebration of past accomplishments but also as a reminder of the opportunities ahead. AI-ALOE remains focused on advancing responsible, learner-centered AI and helping define how artificial intelligence can support learning at scale in the years to come.
